Formative and Summative Evaluation are indispensable routinary work of classroom teachers. At the end of every lesson, formative evaluation is administered to determine the effectiveness of teaching and to ascertain how much the students achieved or reached the goals or objectives of the learning tasks. Likewise, at the end of every unit or chapter, summative evaluation is given to determine the mastery of the subject matter.
In this chapter we will be discussing the uses of both formative and summative evaluation and it's importance in the classroom.
Questions:
1. Which is more important, formative or summative?
2. Strengths of Formative over Summative, vice versa.
3. Recitation is one of the examples of Formative Evaluation. How will you handle errors committed by students during recitation?

1. Which is more important, formative or summative?
ReplyDeleteIn my own point of view FORMATIVE is important than the summative. Why? It is a method for judging the worth of an activity while it is in progress. This part of the evaluation focuses on the process. Thus, formative evaluations are basically done on the fly. They permit the learners and instructors to monitor how well the instructional goals and objectives are being met. Its main purpose is to catch deficiencies so that the proper learning interventions can take place that allows the learners to master the required skills and knowledge.
2. Strengths of Formative over Summative, vice versa.
FORMATIVE
Teachers benefit from it. Teachers are able to determine what standards students already know and to what degree. Teachers can decide what minor modifications or major changes in instruction they need to makes so that all students can succeed in upcoming instruction and on subsequent assessments. Teachers can create appropriate lessons and activities for groups of learners or individual students. Teachers can inform students about their current progress in order to help those set goals for improvement. As well as the students, students are more motivated to learn. Students take responsibility for their own learning. Students become users of assessment.
SUMMATIVE
They can, if designed correctly, provide evidence for a cause-and-effect relationship. They assess long-term effects. They provide data on impacts and they can provide data on change across time.
3. Recitation is one of the examples of Formative Evaluation. How will you handle errors committed by students during recitation?
Mistakes are normal. No human being is perfect. If a pupil/student commits an error while reciting, corrections should be made after the recitation. But please keep this in mind, as an Educator; we must never humiliate our students. Our reaction towards their answer during a recitation will have a great impact as they grow old. We should not embarrass any pupil/student for giving a wrong response, for it will make him uncomfortable, self-conscious causing confusion and shame. Hence, if we praise them for having the courage to answer even if it was wrong will gain their confidence. Teachers should exercise due care and prudence in handling the responses of the pupils/students. Sarcasm and ridicule have no place in the classroom. Teachers should refrain from asking only bright ones for it will discourage the others to recite.
1. In my opinion, both form of evaluation are important to determine how the students perform in general. In a normal basis, we make sure that in every plan that we do the outcome should be good and that’s where both evaluation takes in. Formative evaluation helps in making sure that the results will be good during the process while Summative evaluation takes over after the process. These two forms of evaluation work hand-in-hand. One determines the possible effects and the other ensures and sustains the effectiveness of the result. In a classroom setting, formative evaluation helps by giving an action in which is necessary to a not so good student whereas the summative evaluation helps through the method of analysis and feedback.
ReplyDelete2. The strengths of formative evaluation over summative evaluation are the following; first, the possible cause of the problem can be early diagnosed in a formative evaluation. Meaning, once it was diagnosed early then the action to prevent it can be done immediately as well and a greater chance of not ruining a good result. Second, formative evaluation can foresee the result of summative evaluation since it is being done first. For the strengths of summative over formative evaluation; one, the process of doing this is easier since it is quantitative. Less hassle as it is numeric and not descriptive. Two, this evaluation is a great form of giving feedback especially in giving the efficacy of the result.
3. Teachers cannot just say how stupid or how unintelligent their students once they were not able to answer the question especially during the recitation. Errors or mistakes during recitation can be handled in a good way by telling the students the right things and not to put down their confidence by saying horrible words. An example would be the teacher saying that the student’s answer is not what they’re looking for but it is good that he/she gave it a try.
1. Assessing learning alone is not sufficient because the ultimate success of the learner is also dependent upon their motivation and commitment to learning. In my own opinion formative evaluation is more essential in learning. Why? I think, one of the goal of formative evaluation is to gather feedback from the learner that can be used by the educators to improve their teaching, with this educator can easily adjust to the interests of the learners, it is also easy for the learners to deal with the lessons. Both the educators and learners benefited in the development and quality of learning.
ReplyDelete2. The capacity of being strong of Formative evaluation is that, Educators are certain that their goals are being achieved and there's a room for improvement of the instruction if it is necessary while Summative evaluation measures the level of fulfillment that is obtained at the end of the lesson which is not good in the part of the learners. The benefit of summative evaluation is to the educator because they might use it, as a guide to the following lesson.
3. I think one way of handling errors during recitation is by responding positively or nicely to the student. Like by saying "Nice try." or :another possible answer from the class?" so that learner don't get intimated and might have the courage to think and try again. :)
1. In my own opinion, summative and formative evaluation is important to be able to know whether the students had learned from the subject or not. But for me, formative evaluation is more essential. Not only because it is planned, but because every after a particular subject is thought, the teacher can immediately assess the students by giving quizzes or recitation. In that way, the teacher would be able to know who had catch-up or not. Also in formative evaluation, it is easier to determine among the students who had attained the mastery of the learning task.
ReplyDelete2. Formative Evaluation
Because the teacher can always give the students quizzes or recitation, I believe that it would also be easier for them to know the weaknesses of his/her students. With this, they would be able to know what the students did not fully understand. Thus, the teacher would be knowledgeable on what topic should be given more time and which students should be given remedial class or the like.
Summative Evaluation
Because it is more on quantitative, it gives the students the idea of their class standing. It would easily be understood especially young students if they had failed or otherwise attained their wanted grade. Unlike formative evaluation, summative evaluation can also inform the teacher if he/she had finished what has to be conducted in the end of the instructional segment or period.
3. As a professional teacher he/she should have humor, which stands for anything funny, which elicits a smile, laughter or amusing reaction. If a student had committed mistake by answering a wrong question or his answer is far from the answer the teacher can always tell nice or encouraging remarks to make the student think about his/her answer again, not those responses that would make the student afraid to answer. Because nowadays, students find it difficult to learn if they are afraid. Therefore, if a teacher could display such humor nothing will be difficult to understand since common feeling of eagerness exist among the students.

ReplyDelete1. the formative evaluation is much more intensive than the summative evaluation. studies has already provided the steps and types on summative and it is more likely on measuring the outcome on what approach was used on the process. thinking of what strategies to use is much more crucial because this would depend the results of the classroom evaluation.
2. strengths of formative evaluation are one, it is an on going process that at the same time gives feedback on the approach used. second you can change the strategy you initially used to come up a better result. third, there are multiple techniques can be used and you can integrate other methods as well. on the other hand, summative are only depending on the output also, you are just to evaluate the process or strategy and its result will just justify its efficacy. however this enhances the chances of choosing the best approach to implement on the class. eliminating the errors that can be done with the help of methods to utilize on measuring the mastery on the concept.
3. recitation is considered as an unplanned exam for students, hence this gives results automatically the recall and the understanding of the lesson. incorrect answers provided by the students are acceptable because this gauges you the level of their understanding. acknowledge and appreciate the effort the child has given on wrong answers. this would also help you to know if there would be also a need to re phrase the question. ask for another try for the student to think deeper or to re course his or her thoughts. call another student to try if he understood or know the answer and briefly explain t the class not to the student who answered incorrectly to still have the trust and cooperation.

ReplyDeleteAssessments should aim to benefit the quality of student learning as well as the professional development of the teacher. Frequent short tests are better than infrequent long ones (Black and William, 1998). Therefore, in my opinion, FORMATIVE EVALUATION is more important than summative evaluation. Since it is done frequently, there is an immediate result whether the learners have mastered the unit, or if there is need for any remedial instruction. And in case of remedial instruction, the teacher will have a basis right away if she needs to improve her instruction by using a different technique and/or strategy, or employ use of aids and/or devices.
2.
Formative Evaluation over Summative Evaluation
- FE makes room for improvement. Since result is immediate, problems with students or teachers, if there are any, can be addressed right away.
Summative Evaluation over Formative Evaluation
- Although long, SE is easier to construct since it is only done at the end of an instructional unit.
- The outcome of an SE can also be used formatively when students or teachers take the results and use them to guide their efforts and activities in the next courses or unit.
3.
Part and parcel of learning are unintended mistakes. As a teacher, give allowance for mistakes. If ever your student commits one, never put down or reprimand harshly. You can give and encouraging “Nice try” or “Try again” to acknowledge that they have tried and that they can have another chance to do better. Don’t correct a student on the spot but, save errors for class correction at the end. Another is to take a fun/playful approach to correcting error. A recitation can be made into a game, like Snakes and Ladders, making it more fun and motivating for the student. The important thing is to contribute to their motivation and confidence in their selves and their capacity to succeed in school.

ReplyDelete1. I would say, both formative and summative evaluation are important. Formative evaluation is needed as preliminary evaluation for a positive summative result. Before a good result happens, there is a process. Both evaluation complement each other as in functioning hand-in-hand.
2. Strength of formative over summative: It's diagnostic; readily measures a student's current knowledge and/or skill for an adjustments or actions that needs to take place. Ongoing feedback to instruction. One good point is mastery-oriented that causes a strong, positive, and long-lasting impact on learning.
Strength of summative over formative: It's evaluative; measures learning outcomes. Judgment. Formal, rigid, & highly structured standard-based assessment. Easy to grade:Quantitative.
3. Being a Teacher/Lecturer/Prof entails a great responsibility & accountability in winning the heart of the students "in the way we respond to them" so that even when they make a mistake during recitation, they are settled that you mean no harm. One way is to create an atmosphere of wanting to keep reciting even when they don't hit the right note at times. Make it energetic, fun, expression of ideas recitation, giving a wrong answer is no big deal!
